(WMC-TV) - Neighbors living near Mendenhall Cove were in shock Friday morning when two officers were shot serving a narcotics warrant.
Action News 5's Jerica Phillips spoke with neighbors who have worked hard to keep their community free of crime.
The community off of Summer Avenue between Mendenhall Cove and McCrory Avenue is known as Avon Meadows.
Residents say it is a fairly quiet subdivision but they have reported a recent rise in drug activity.
Witnesses to the shooting say it was a very intense morning.
Gatlin says she is a member of the Citizens' Policy Academy and she often rides along with officers while they are on duty. She hopes now more people will show more gratitude for the men and women who serve and protect.
"I see what they go through. A lot of people don't understand the things that they have to go through. The way that they have to put their lives out there for our safety and then to have people just to come by and do stupid things," said Gatlin. "It's not worth it, so we're just praying for the families."
Nearly 12 hours after the shooting, homicide detectives continued to piece together evidence at the scene of the crime.
