(WMC-TV) - A 2-year-old is in critical condition after being hit by a stray bullet while watching cartoons in her own home.

Neighbors at the Warren Apartments on Clementine Road in South Memphis say the shooting began Tuesday. They called police, but the shooting continued Wednesday morning.

Christie Berry, 6-years-old, showed Action News 5's Jerica Phillips where bullets went flying through a window where she and her siblings were sitting.

"We were watching TV and then I heard gunshots and one had come through the window and shot C.C.," the 6-year-old described the scene.

Christie says her 2-year-old sister, Chrissiya, was shot in the arm by a stray bullet.

Henry McCracken and his wife watch the toddler and her brothers and sisters while their mom is at work.

Police say around 8 a.m. Wednesday, a fight broke out between several people in the apartment complex and someone started shooting.

"Five or six shots first, then I started yelling get on the floor get on the floor and they all started hollering and screaming and laying down," said McCracken.

Police say at least one other man was shot and then driven by a private-car to Methodist South Hospital.

McCracken says the complex has been riddled with violence in the past few years and he wants out.

"I damn sure want it to be shut down," he said about the Warren Apartments.

When asked if she is scared to live and play in the neighborhood on Clementine Road, Christie Berry responded, "I want to find another house."

Other neighbors feel the same way. One woman, who did not want to appear on camera, said she is moving out next month.

"I just want my baby to be able to be a child. It's not fair for her to walk outside not knowing when to duck, it's not fair," she said.

Other residents say they want the apartment complex to be condemned, or they want out of their lease. Without the means to pick up and move, many say they are simply surviving.

"A lot of us is over here by force, we have no choice. If we could make it better for our children, we would. I would, because it's sad," one neighbor said.
