(WMC-TV) – Can a few months make a difference in how well kindergarten students do in class?
That is the premise behind a new cutoff requirement you will see parents in Tennessee and many other states complying within 2013.
The bottom line for this new rule is that children here in Tennessee must be five-years-old by August 31 instead of the September 30 date that has been the standard for many years.
The Tennessee Department of Education says about 1, 200 children with September birthdays will be affected by the change this year.
Tennessee is riding the national wave of opinion that children will be better off academically and socially if they spend additional time in pre-school.
This new requirement will change again for the 2014-15 school year, when the cutoff date will permanently become August 15.
