(WMC-TV) - A Memphis family is celebrating a second chance at life this Christmas Eve after a daughter saved her father's life by giving him a kidney.
"She's given me another chance to live. Second chance," Joe Sevier said about his 23-year-old daughter, Brandy.
"I saw him deteriorating in front of me," she said.
After three years of watching her father suffer from kidney failure, Brandy used her Christmas break from the University of Memphis to give her father one of her kidneys.
"There was no doubt about it. He could have it two years ago he didn't want to take it," said Brandy.
"I felt bad because I didn't want her to hurt," explained Joe.
Finally his illness became too serious and just three weeks ago he was hospitalized.
Doctors worried he would not be strong enough for surgery, but he recovered. The father and daughter duo went through surgery in hospital rooms right across the hall from one another.
Now, just one week after the transplant, Brandy says his color is coming back. Her dad is putting on weight and he is no longer attached to dialysis machines.
"This is the best Christmas ever," said wife and mother, Veronica, who is happy to have her family whole again … just in time for Christmas.
