(WMC-TV) – A parking war is erupting at the Memphis International Airport. It comes amid the opening of the airport's massive new parking garage.
There are more than 7,000 spots in the airport's new parking structure, but not all the airport's neighbors are happy about the way it's being marketed.
An electronic message that reads "Ditch the shuttle, park at the airport for $6 a day" is what greets visitors passing through the main entrance at the airport.
Other signs like this one read, "To a shuttle you're just another piece of luggage."
Both signs aim to get drivers to use the new parking garage. The first few floors of the structure opened recently.
Air traveler Don Coleman has always preferred parking at the airport. He says more competitive rates are an incentive.
But the companies running the off-airport parking lots are raising issues with the marketing campaign, insisting that they are not taking anyone for a ride.
Besides, one operator told Action News 5 he could transport someone from his lot to the terminal in the same time it may take someone to find a parking spot and walk themselves.
"When you invest in a structure like this, obviously it has to pay for itself in some form or another, so some suffer, some gain," said passenger Coleman.
Due to the holiday, airport officials were unavailable for comment. But they said in the past there is enough business for everyone.
