DeSoto County making changes to Crime Stoppers program

(WMC-TV) - DeSoto County is making some changes to their Crime Stoppers program.

Southaven Police, Olive Branch Police, The DeSoto County Sheriff's Department and every law enforcement agency in the county works with DeSoto County crime stoppers.

After the director said there wasn't as much participation in the program last year, the groups are working together to revamp it for 2013.

Whether crimes occur in Southaven or small communities in the county DeSoto County -  Crime Stoppers handles the tips.

District two supervisor Mark Gardner says in 2013 agencies will focus on better communication to make sure everyone has the valuable intel from the tip line.

"They just weren't getting together and talking as much, we weren't promoting crime stoppers as much as we should have," said DeSoto County Supervisor Mark Gardner.

Gardner said the county will look into buying billboards and TV ads to promote the tip line.

DeSoto County crime stoppers is an anonymous service that has helped police solve cases as recently as Christmas.

Tipsters are eligible for cash rewards.

Gardner hopes the new year will bring a new attitude to the program.

"Each municipal police department and the sheriff's department will be meeting every month and just talking about exchanging information, sharing information," he said.

If you see crime happening or know information that can help authorities solve a case, call crime stoppers at 662-429-TIPS.
