MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Memphis police say the man who stole an MPD police cruise and set fire to it also stole a shotgun from the car.

The Memphis Police Association (MPA) considers this another example of how brazen certain criminals have become.

The police cruiser was stolen early Wednesday morning when officers questioned two men about a carjacking.

The squad car was later found burning on a dead-end street.

According to a police report, the officer's 12 gauge shotgun was also stolen from the car.

While the investigation continues into how this bizarre chain of events happened, MPA President Mike Williams says it is indicative of recent criminal behavior.

"We've been making remarks over the last year about how the tides are turning and a lot of the criminal elements starting to confront police officers, it's getting very dangerous out there, not just for the citizens, but for police as well," said Williams.

The suspect believed to have stolen the police cruiser and the shotgun is only described as a young man in his early 20s.

Police believe he set the car on fire in order to get rid of evidence like fingerprints.
