MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A Memphis City School is having some trouble keeping the heat on at one elementary school. It is beginning to cause some concern for parents.

It took almost the entire school day to get the heat on at Levi Elementary School Thursday.

At least one parent wants to know why the school never told her that the heat has been off more than it has been on since students returned from their winter break.

"I'm concerned about everybody that's inside school today, it's cold," said Tuere Jackson, who noticed something unusual inside the school Thursday morning. "I always take kids inside school and drop them off and I was wondering why all the kids were in their hats and their coats."

She continued, "That's when I went over the air vent and felt that it was blowing out cold air."

Jackson's children attend the elementary school in South Memphis where the heat has been on the fritz since students returned from their holiday vacation.

"And it's very cold outside. So that worries me. I was thinking my kids were in a warm environment, but they wasn't," she said.

When Jackson learned that Thursday was the second day the heat had gone out, she took her four children, who range in age from five to 11, home.

"As a parent, I wish someone would have notified me about the heat. I would have never sent them to school yesterday," said Jackson.

The district considered letting kids out early but say the temperature did not go low enough to justify an early dismissal.

Jackson says that is a matter of opinion.

"That was my main thing, to call you all to let everybody know what's going on inside the school because I don't have contact with each and every parent, so that's why I called you all," she explained to Action News 5.

A spokesperson for the school district says the heat was back on at Levi Elementary School around 1:00 p.m. Thursday afternoon, which is about an hour and 15 minutes before the dismissal bell rings.

Students are expected to report to class as scheduled on Friday.
