Heated rivalry between Tigers and Volunteers could continue

Friday night a heated rivalry could come to an end as the University of Memphis Tigers play the Tennessee Volunteers.

Tigers Coaching Staff said the rivalry between Memphis and Tennessee is a dead issue from Tigers Coaching Staff, but Action News 5 was told that might not be totally accurate.

Whether on the basketball court, or the football field, when the Blue and Grey goes up against the Big Orange, it's bragging rights on the line.

But it's a rivalry fans could have to learn to live without at least for the time being.

The Tigers and Vols play their final scheduled game of the current contract tomorrow night in Knoxville.

With the exception of a two-year break in 2003 and 2004, the two teams have met up on the basketball court every year since the 1988-89 season.

Much like former coach John Calipari felt about the series with Ole Miss, Tigers coach Josh Pastner said in his weekly news conference he didn't see any reason to continue the series.

However, Memphis Athletic Director Tom Bowen and Tennessee Athletic Director Dave Hart have been in discussions about a possible continuation of the rivalry.

This may be news to Pastner, who said he believed the series was over, and he and his AD were on the same page.
Tennessee coach Cuonzo Martin has said he would prefer to keep playing Memphis.

he Vols lead the series between the two schools 14-to-10.

This not the first time Pastner and Bowen have had a lack of communication.

Earlier this year, it involved the Ole Miss series and whether that series would be renewed,  which it was.

The only thing for certain right now about this series is that the Tigers and Vols hit the court at 7 p.m. central time tomorrow in Knoxville.
