Road rage victim describes shooting

MEMPHIS, TN - (WMC-TV) – In a Breaking News Update, a victim of a suspected Mid-South road rage shooting shares his story of how bullets came within just feet of his baby.

It is pretty shocking. The family says they did not know the shooter and aren't really sure why it happened.

"The baby was in the car. With a baby, you know how mad I am," victim Derrick Warren said.

Warren was in his car with his girlfriend in the passenger seat and her 7-month-old son in the back seat when someone in a white GMC truck pulled up next to them and started shooting. Bullets shattered the window in the back of the car. One bullet grazed his girlfriend's back.

"Maybe a road rage. I couldn't really tell you," Warren explained.

Warren says they had just picked up the 7-month-old at an apartment complex on James Road.   As they drove down the road there was a school bus stopped letting children off.  He says the car in front of him suddenly stopped forcing him to slam on his brakes. He honked his horn.  Warren says he moved into the next lane, and the truck with possibly three males in it pulled up next to him.

"They pulled to the driver's side. He had the window down and put it over his shoulder and pulled it out," said Warren.

Warren says he didn't stop to think. He just took off as fast as he could to get away, coming to his house where he called the police.  He looks at 7-month-old Desmond, who was not injured, and is grateful.

His friends say it is rough out there.

"Stuff like that happens every day though," Warren said. "It's crazy. It's crazy. It's the new year. This needs to stop."

It happened so fast there is no good description of the suspects. They were in a white GMC 4-door truck.

The baby's mother was taken to the hospital as a precaution but is expected to be okay.
