Police find children unsupervised at daycare

(WMC-TV) – Memphis police and child services are investigating after they say several children were found in a daycare Tuesday morning unsupervised.

Fire crews responded to the daycare when a medical alarm went off. The medical call turned out to be a false alarm. But firefighters say they found six children, ranging in age from three to 13, alone at the child care center with no adult supervision.

After police were called, investigators say an adult later showed up at the house.

No charges have been filed but an investigation into the circumstances is still underway.

Neighbors say the house has doubled as a daycare for years and they are unaware of any previous problems.

"I think it's very sad and I would hate for my kids to be left alone in that type of environment," said neighbor Sonya Curry.

Action News 5's Nick Kenney tried speaking with the people who own the home. They did not answer the door.

Kenney is also waiting to hear back from the Department of Human Services regarding the official classification and status of the daycare.
