Teen recovering after shooting at anti-violence meeting

(WMC-TV) – A 17-year-old is recovering after being shot in the neck outside the North Frayser Community Center Tuesday night. He was there Tuesday to attend a "stop the violence" meeting sponsored by a Memphis city initiative.

Memphis police say the community center was full of young people from Raleigh and Frayser, ranging in age from 13 to 24.

According to investigators, the 17-year-old victim from Raleigh stepped outside to use the phone, and was hit in the neck by a stray bullet that ricocheted off the building.

Some are speculating gangs were behind the shooting. Officers have not confirmed that but they are investigating every angle.

"I would have told them ‘Don't bring the Bloods from Raleigh to the building.' But they didn't even ask," said youth minister Joe Hunter.

Joe Hunter is the founder of a group called Gang Inc. at the North Frayser Community Center. It is an organization designed to stop gang violence. He says the 901 Block Squad did not notify him about the meeting that had three youths from Raleigh and the rest from Frayser.

Delvin Lane, who leads the 901 Block Squad, says he does not think the shooting had anything to do with gangs.

"I don't think it was an attack on him from kids over here," he said.

Whatever the reason for the shooting, the young people who like to come to the center are thinking twice.

"It makes it not safe to come around," Trell Bell said. "Folks got to start coming in their house early 'cause night time it be too unsafe."

Memphis police are investigating. The victim was taken to the MED, and police say he has been upgraded to non-critical condition.

According to Joe Hunter, a pastor who works to stop gang violence, told Action News 5 on the scene there was a gang prevention activity being held at the community center at the time of the shooting.
