Police respond to shooting at Hamilton High School - WMC Action News 5 - Memphis, Tennessee

Young man shot outside Hamilton High

MEMPHIS, TN - (WMC-TV) – A mess of flashing blue lights and yellow crime tape greeted confused teenagers before they walked into the Hamilton High School basketball game.

Randy Whiting says he ran to help an 18-year-old who collapsed in the middle of the road after he was shot in the leg.

"I heard about seven or eight gunshots," said Whiting. "It seemed to me like he was wanting to go to sleep, and I didn't want to let him go to sleep because that's the beginning of the end right there."

A woman named Angilee was frantically searching for her nephew after she says some of the people he was with were heard arguing before the gunshots.

"I don't know if he's laying in a hole somewhere, shot and nobody knows where he's at or I don't know," she said. "I hate all this ugliness."

Memphis Police tell us only one person was shot and the incident was two blocks from the high school.

The victim apparently made his way to the road in front of the school when Whiting says he found him.

"We were talking to him and trying to keep him attentive," said Whiting. "I didn't really want somebody to die right there in front of me."

Whiting has little ones of his own, and now has to explain to them what happened outside their house on what they say is a normally quiet place.

"I ain't gonna sleep right, at all. I hate that too," he said.

Memphis Police say they have a known suspect, but so far no arrests have been made. We do know the victim was not a student at the school. We'll continue to follow this breaking story and bring you the latest at wmctv.com.
