Public works prepares for flooding in coming days

(WMC-TV) - Memphis Public Works is planning for the several days of solid rain that is being predicted by meteorologists.

Public works is hoping to minimize flooding on the city's roadways for the next few days. Memphis Public Works Deputy Director Robert Knecht said they are already getting calls.

"We've had 18 calls received," said Knecht. "They've already dispatched all those calls."

He said some of the calls came from the Midtown area, but a lot of them were in Whitehaven.

"Sweeping certain parts of the city, there are just certain areas. Just trying to clean inlets and remove any potential obstruction that may cause us problems," Knecht explained.

Some of the persistent flooding spots for Memphis crews include Union Avenue at East Parkway under the overpass, Central Avenue at the underpass near the kids' museum, and Southern Avenue near the railroad tracks.

Knecht says his crews are ready for the rain but it is the sudden heavy rain that really gives his team a challenge.

"We do all the preventive that we can and then, of course, we monitor," he said.

Memphis Public Works' dispatch is ready to handle your calls if you notice a flooding issue in your neighborhood over the next few days. That number is 901-357-0100.
