Local experts advise flu shot for children, adults

(WMC-TV) - The nation is in the middle of a deadly flu season, one of the worst in decades.

As emergency rooms are flooded, local health officials said a flu shot goes a long way in helping you stay flu free.

Shelby County health department revealed that people are not procrastinating on getting the flu shot, as many used to do in the past.

"I got sick. I've been in bed for two weeks. I thought, oh my God, I'm getting well now. I've got to go get it," said patient Brena Bowling.

Many in waiting rooms are hopeful that a flu shot will prevent them from getting sick.

"I'm not taking any risks," said patient James Wilkins.

Nationwide people are getting the flu shot for the first time after reports that this flu strain has been deadly and worse than years past.

Those over six months of age can get the shot.

"Right now, it seems our increased activity is in the pediatric population with the children's hospital getting disproportionately affected at this time," said Shelby County Health Department officer Helen Morrow.

So far this season, the Centers for Disease Control reports 18 pediatric deaths across the country.

It has also proven fatal for the elderly as they are more at risk for serious flu complications.

For adults, Dr. Morrow said the flu comes on fast. In the morning you could feel fine and by the evening, terrible.
