Mayor concerned about flu outbreak - WMC Action News 5 - Memphis, Tennessee

Mayor concerned about flu outbreak

(WMC-TV)- The Shelby County mayor is concerned about the severe outbreak of the flu virus in the Mid-South.

Mayor Mark Luttrell met with health department officials Friday morning to tackle the issue.

Luttrell said, "Fortunately at this point, we are not at the point of a public health crisis."

But he is still urging the public to do their part and combat this virus head-on.

"We're not prepared when it comes to the number of people who have not taken advantage of the immunizations" said Luttrell. "Immunizations will make us better prepared and we're falling a little bit short in that area."

The mayor said there is plenty of the vaccine available and you can still get your flu shot at any of the Shelby County health departments for free.

Health officials say it take about two weeks for the vaccine to take full effect, and even those who have got the shot are still susceptible.

Good news though, doctors are saying this year's strain is a good match. Flu vaccinations are recommended for everyone six months and older.

The Shelby County Health Department is offering free flu shots to anyone who wants one.  Click here for a list of locations and hours of operation.
