Road crews warn drivers of icy bridges, overpasses

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Transportation crews are already working to make sure the roads are as safe as can be as winter weather makes its way through the area.

Salt and sand trucks are on the roads in Shelby County but road crews want to urge drivers to continue being cautious.

Bridges and overpasses are the big problem during winter weather events. They tend to freeze over the fastest.

"The biggest concern is potential refreezing on bridges and overpasses where temperatures will stay low, surface temps below freezing," said Deputy Public Works Director Robert Knecht. "On typical streets where the underground is warmer, those recover faster."

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office implemented its 'inclement weather policy' until further notice. That means anyone involved in an accident needs to exchange license and insurance information and report it to police later.

Meanwhile, Shelby County's new emergency operations center is on standby to coordinate response if the weather gets much worse.
