MLGW advises winter weather preparation

(WMC-TV) - The winter weather left only five power outages on the MLGW map Tuesday evening.

The big challenge in icy conditions is the long recovery time in the event of mass power outages.

So it is important that you are ready, in case the outages increase.

MLGW Spokesman Glen Thomas said the effects of the storm on your water and power could creep up on you.

"With the continued effects of ice on trees, sometimes it's not immediate, sometimes it can be hours later that a tree or branch will come down," he said.

The main threat during an ice storm is power outage.

"It's good to be prepared for the possibility of being without power for a while," said Thomas.

It's also a good idea to have an emergency kit handy.

"If you've got some kind of emergency kit you've set up with bottled water, batteries, a battery-powered radio, flashlight, things like that can make it a little easier to make it through until the power is restored," said Thomas.

Do not forget about having a manual can opener on hand, as well as non-perishable foods, and to have your cell phone powered up.

Also, if you're worried about your water pipes bursting from the cold, turn them on to a slow drip.

Thomas said times have changed since the Ice Storm of 1994.

"Communications technology has really progressed tremendously. It allows us numerous ways to communicate with customers during an outage," said Thomas.

These are the important numbers you need to know:
  • The MLGW Outage Hotline is 901-544-6500 for power outages
  • The 24-Hour Emergency line 901-528-4465 for downed power lines or other emergencies
