Municipal school negotiations hit a snag

(WMC-TV) – When asked to sum up the latest negotiations about municipal schools, Arlington Mayor Mike Wissman and Bartlett Mayor Keith McDonald said the road to a deal is getting bumpy.

"We definitely are not as close to an agreement as we thought we were last week," McDonald said.

"It's frustrating," Wissman added.

Both say mediators from each side of the issue have been involved in the latest meetings that haven't been face-to-face. County Commission Chairman Mike Ritz said nothing's changed on their end and he believes the issue may lie in the legal language.

"What it says to different people changed, and I think quite frankly that may have occurred," Ritz said.

Wissman and McDonald both agreed.

"Once the attorneys get a hold of it, sometimes the language gets skewed between what everyone thinks the conversation was," Wissman said.

"We have, I guess, two parties looking at the same thing through different lenses," McDonald said.

Neither side can discuss specifics of the negotiations, but Ritz wonders if there are more concerns between the municipalities.

"There's 6 different opinions there, they're not all riding the same boat," Ritz said.

Negotiations are expected to continue through the lawyers, and both sides hope to close the gaps that McDonald and Wissman feel may have been widened.

"We have sent our attorneys back to say no that's not acceptable," McDonald.
