Body found at the Port of West Memphis

(WMC-TV) - A body was found at the Port of West Memphis Friday morning.

Crittenden County Sheriff's deputies and search and rescue crews were at the scene until late Friday afternoon.

The body was removed that morning and is now in the hands of Crittenden County Coroner.

Search crews have been searching the Mississippi River since Wednesday night when a barge captain was reported to have fallen overboard.

All investigators have confirmed is that the victim is a white male, and appears to be a bald older man wearing jeans.

They did not locate any identification on him.

"The workers that work out here, I believe it was Kinder Morgan, called and said that they had seen a body in the water. What they believed to be a body in the water and indeed it was," said Mike Callender of the Crittenden County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators cannot assume the identity of the male victim, but due to his description they are looking into whether it is that of missing barge captain Vernon Bumgarner, 60, of Louisiana who fell off his boat Wednesday night.

The search has been going on far south of here in DeSoto County, but Callender say it is possible that crew members on that barge miscalculated where Bumgarner went overboard.

Again, that has not been confirmed and investigators said they are only investigating that because they know the man is missing.

They have ruled out the possibility that it is Wynne, Arkansas officer Nicolas Swink for two reasons including the body does not fit the description and there's no way Swinks body could get from the St. Francis River to Port of West Memphis.
