Man accused of trying to kill 87-year-old mother

MEMPHIS, TN - (WMC-TV) – An empty can sat outside a southwest Memphis home Tuesday. Police say a man doused the place with gasoline after holding his 87-year-old mother against her will for nearly a week.

Patrice Jones lives down the street.

"I think that's just insane," said Jones.  "I mean, a person like that belongs behind bars."

That's where 51-year-old Douglas Farmer was being held.  He was charged with aggravated assault and accused of threatening to burn down his mother's home after she said he pointed an assault rifle at her and pulled the trigger.  Fortunately, it jammed.

"She's a good person," said Jones.  "All she do is sit on the porch and speak to everybody."

Police said the elderly woman was able to call for help when Farmer finally left the house.

"Unfortunately, we see a lot of incidents in our community where grown children assault their parents," said Anna Whalley with the Shelby County Crime Victims Center.

She said many older victims are afraid to report abuse inflicted by their children.

She's just glad the 87-year-old woman in this case got help.

"We don't know what happened, how long it's been going on," said Whalley.  "But we want to stop that cycle and make sure no one's hurt."

"I couldn't imagine anyone wanting to hurt their mom," said Patrice Jones.  "You know, you only have one mom."

Police said Douglas Farmer refused to make any statements in regard to the disturbing attack on his mother.

At last check, his bond was set at $50,000.
