MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - Unified School Board members gave tentative approval to a resolution to dissolve Memphis City Schools, and proposed a calendar for the upcoming school year.
The Unified School District of Shelby County is about to make an official launch with the 2013-14 school year.
Board members gave tentative approval to a measure that would officially make July 1 as the last day for Memphis City Schools.
That gives plenty of time for the Unified District to get business and budgeting in order before the new school year begins.
The board also discussed the proposed calendar year.
It calls for teachers to return to school July 29, with the first day of school on Aug. 5.
Fall Break would begin at the end of the first nine weeks of school, lasting one week - that's October 7 through the 11.
A three-day break has been proposed for Thanksgiving with the dates being Wednesday, Nov. 27 through Friday, Nov. 29.
And just in time for the holidays, Winter Break from Dec. 23 through Jan. 6, 2014.
Spring Break would fall on the week of March 10.
It seems as though the last day of school for the 2013-14 school year would be May 23, giving students a jump on Memorial Day weekend.
All of these dates are tentative, the Unified School Board is expected to vote on the resolution and calendar at the next week's meeting: Tuesday, Jan. 29.
Public comments are welcome and still being reviewed on the board's website.
The board is also discussing the evaluation policies for the next Unified District Superintendent, whenever that person is chosen.
As far as school uniforms go, Calendar and Internal Board Operations Committees board member Kevin Woods said the uniforms is an issue the committee will take up most likely in March
