MY TURN: Camping out for school applications

(WMC-TV) - One of the benefits of having a merger between city and county schools is that the best practices from each district can be incorporated in the new school system. Let's hope that one of the practices that gets eliminated is the tent-city process that has parents camping out for days to get spots for their children at the better public schools. It's easy to understand why dedicated parents would want the best for their children, but this process is clearly not fair to many students. There are many families with loving, caring parents who do not have the luxury of being able to take days off from work to go build a tent out in front of the school administration building. Other students have the misfortune of being in a household with only one parent. This process disadvantages them once again. Obviously, the longer term answer is for there to be more quality schools so people would not feel so desperate to get their children into a good one. Short term, there's got to be a better way to do this.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email or call 800-465-1210.
