DRUMMONDS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A Drummonds man is behind bars, accused of shooting his wife to death as a 5-year-old boy watched cartoons nearby.

Tipton County sheriff's deputies found Shannon Hatchel dead in her mobile home in Drummonds, Tennessee last week. Her family is happy to know her husband of two years is behind bars.

"I don't want him to die. I want him to get tortured every day for what he's done," said Glenn Cox, the victim's brother-in-law. "He took somebody away from three kids, in front of my son."

Glenn Cox's 5-year-old boy was inside the home, watching cartoons when the shooting happened.

Richard Hatchel was charged with Shannon's murder Monday afternoon.

"She wanted a divorce from him and he came back to her and she was sticking to her guns, telling him 'No'," said Cox.

Police say Shannon kicked Richard out of the house. He came back Friday to bring her money. That is when the two got into an argument. Richard admitted that he went to his truck, got his rifle, and shot her in the chest.

"She was a good person. She would do anything for anybody, baby-sit for you or anything," said Cox.

After the murder, Richard Hatchel took off, texting his mother saying he had hurt his wife.

Deputies caught up with him Saturday morning.

"After everything happened, he tried to put a rag on her and cover her up and tell her it was OK," said Cox.

Richard Hatchel is sitting in the Tipton County Jail with no bond. He will face a judge for the first time on Tuesday afternoon.
