Police officer faces judge on domestic assault charge

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – A Memphis police officer, who swore to protect and serve, will face a judge Thursday morning. Officer Lee Potts has been charged with domestic assault.

Police say a woman accused Potts of hitting her in the face at a home in southeast Shelby County - causing injuries. Potts later turned himself in to authorities.

He was off-duty at the time of the alleged incident. He has since been relieved of duty, and the Shelby County Sheriff's Office is handling the investigation.

Potts joins a number of other officers who have been charged with domestic assault. And Toney Armstrong, MPD Director, is speaking out against this kind of conduct.

"Domestic violence cannot be taken lightly," Armstrong stated. "Our officers are provided annual training on how to cope with potential domestic related situations. It is disappointing to know that a moment of anger could potentially cause this officer his freedom or career."

Officer Potts has been on the force since 1998. His arraignment in court starts at 9 am.
