3 shot in drive-by shooting near elementary school

(WMC-TV) - At least three people were shot in a drive-by shooting near an elementary school Thursday afternoon.

Three men were hit around 1 p.m. just yards from the Hollywood Success Academy.

Police say three men were taking turns riding a dirt bike up and down Matthews Avenue near Bryan Street when a white car drove by and bullets started flying.

"Yeah, very upsetting. Because I live right there. It's scary. Real scary," said Leon Bonner, who lives in the neighborhood.

Two of the men were grazed by bullets. They were treated and released on the scene. A 19-year-old is at The MED in critical condition. Nobody else was hurt.

"It's sad. Because people don't have no concern about the human lives that are walking through that neighborhood out here," said Pastor Jonathan Prince, North Memphis.

Pastor Prince used to be involved in the old neighborhood association. He says many people in that neighborhood live in fear of incidents just like this one.

Some people believe more police could be the answer.

"We need a presence when we can take back our neighborhoods and get back to the community that people once had out here," said Pastor Prince.

Police are still looking for the shooting suspects, but they do not have a good description to go on right now.

"Suspect information is kinda sketchy at this time. Male, black gentleman wearing a ski mask. That's all I can say right now," said Lieutenant Col. Wardell Smith.

The Hollywood Success Academy went into lockdown immediately after the shooting as a precaution.

Investigators ask anyone with information about the drive-by shooting to call Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH.
