(WMC-TV) - The man accused of shooting and killing fallen Memphis police officer Martoiya Lang appeared in court Thursday.

Treveno Campbell is charged with first degree murder and attempted murder, but he was not the only person who was in court for the incident at the home on Mendenhall Cove.

Willie Braddock, who was inside the home when the fatal shots were fired, was also there for a preliminary hearing on marijuana charges.

But just before the preliminary hearings started, the attorneys for Campbell and Braddock executed waivers that will basically send their cases to the grand jury.

"They did that because in turn for waving the hearing, we are going to receive some discovery that we otherwise wouldn't get today," said Braddock's defense attorney, Blake Ballin.

Attorney William Massey is representing Treveno Campbell on charges that he fatally shot Officer Martoiya Lang and wounded Officer William Vrooman.

"Well once we gather all the facts to this case then we will determine what defenses are available to us," said Massey.

Officer Lang died December 14 when she and her officer Vrooman served a drug warrant at a house on Mendenhall Cove.

District Attorney Amy Weirich is leading the prosecution against both Campbell and Braddock herself. It is a move that is described as very rare.

"This was a case that hit close to home for a lot of us," explained Weirich. "We work very closely with a lot of these officers and it just felt like the right thing for me to do for the community, for the office and to make sure that justice is done."

It is not clear when both men will be back in court. That is up to the grand jury to decide.
