Slain nurse's family forgives her murderer

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - The family of a nurse who was murdered by her husband is transforming the tragic loss into a big lesson for others.

Micah Pate was a young nurse in Bartlett who was killed by her husband in 2009. Instead of seeking revenge, her family is choosing the path of forgiveness and service.

Documentary filmmaker Ginger Blackstone marvels at the Rine family as they overcome the murder of their daughter, Micah.

"This is the kind of thing that destroys families. Destroys. And they're not destroyed," said Blackstone. "They have speaking engagements all over the place. They go and talk to young women about you know, be careful who you marry."

"You can't just allow yourself to fall in love with the first thing that comes along," said Micah's mother, Terri Rine.

Micah fell in love with Thomas Pate in 2004 while attending Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas.

Seven years later, he pleaded guilty to shooting her in the back of the head.

"And yes, I can say I've forgiven him... but ask me this afternoon or later on this evening and I'm still in that process," said Terri.

"I can't let Thomas stand in the way of me seeing Micah again. Because I have to be forgiven so I can see Micah again and be with her in Heaven," said her father, Dennis Rine.

When Ginger Blackstone interviewed Thomas Pate at a Tennessee prison where he is serving a 25 year sentence, the Rine family sent words of forgiveness.

"He never apologized to the family. If anything, he said, 'If there's one message that I could give them: leave my family alone,'" said Blackstone.

"Obviously we would like that, an apology. Part of forgiveness is... I'll leave the choice up to him," said Dennis.

The family is broken -- but not destroyed.

The Micah Pate documentary is set to debut in Micah's hometown of Searcy, Arkansas in late April.

A Memphis premiere will be held a few days later once a venue is secured.
