(WMC-TV) - Teaching has changed a lot in the past decade. A Memphis teacher learned that the hard way after she received evaluation scores that put her at the bottom.

Now, East High School teacher Meah King is adjusting her teaching style to figure out a better way to make sure her students are successful.

Five years ago, King thought she had teaching all figured out. Then the district switched the way it did teacher evaluations and student testing.

Meah's scores came back low. She was at a loss. She thought about changing careers but instead decided that she was the one who needed to change.

"I had to find out. What is it these kids like? And to really intertwine those educational concepts into whatever they like," she said.

King, who is also an East High School graduate, is now in the 1 percent of top MCS teachers.

Just two years ago she won the $25,000 Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award for her work in the classroom.

King hopes that parents will hear her story and become more confident in their children's education and take a more active role in their learning.
