Mother of wandering child face abuse charges

(WMC-TV) - A 5-year-old girl was found wandering the streets of Millington alone, and now the child's mother and her boyfriend are facing child abuse charges.

A north Shelby County home became a crime scene after a 5-year-old girl wandered away from a car parked in the driveway in the middle of the night.

"Yes, its just terrible you don't like to hear things like that," said resident Shirley Nail.

According to investigators, Jocelyn Temple and her boyfriend Keith Miller went to a friend's birthday event Friday night.

But the affidavit of complaint said hours later when they pulled into their driveway, Miller, Temple and her two young boys went into the house to get some sleep.

Everyone "forgot" that the 5-year-old girl was still asleep in the car.

The girl woke up later and tried to get into the house.

When she found the doors locked she started the long walk toward her grandparents house.

The little girl was able to make it here to a B.P. Gas station.

Neighbors said it's about a half mile walk from her home.

A stranger spotted the child, and when he found out what happened he got the girl to show where she lived and that's when officers were called.

Nail said she's surprised by what happened, because she knows Temple as a mom who's always very protective of her children.

"And she was always there with them, and always very loving to them and its just a complete shock to all of us," said Nail.
