MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - Former Interim Shelby County Mayor Joe Ford walked out the door at 201 Poplar around noon Tuesday, after being arrested at his Bartlett home.
Ford is charged with passing a bad check totaling more than $1,300.
"I don't know what the charges are. I don't have any comment. I don't owe the news media or anybody else an explanation of why I was here. I'm not in politics," said Ford.
The arrest warrant says last July, Ford went into Lauderdale Liquors to cash a $1,301 check on the Joe Ford Funeral Home account. That check came back in August because of insufficient funds.
"Yeah, I remember him coming in. He wrote the checks, then paid the checks off, and the checks bounced," says Lauderdale Liquors employee Carl Beaurguard.
This is not Ford's first bad check debacle.
In 2011, he faced similar charges for writing a check for more than $5,000 to the late Las Savell for two Rolex watches.
"I don't have to report to nobody but God and my family. I don't owe you all an explanation," he said.
After several attempts to contact Ford about the bounced check, Lauderdale Liquors store owner took the case to the authorities.
"Anybody's gonna be upset after they lose money," said Beaurguard.
Meanwhile, the store owner is still waiting for his money.
The former interim county mayor is due back in court Wednesday at 8:30 a.m.
