Southaven aldermen question gift card spending

(WMC-TV) - Thousands of dollars in gift cards to a local restaurant are being questioned as the latest twist in a never-ending saga at Southaven City Hall.

Southaven Mayor Greg Davis and his Board of Aldermen devised a plan to wine and dine business prospects while controlling spending at the same time. But the aldermen say they have not been kept in the loop.

"We did request a full report in the Chophouse cards, the gift cards," said Southaven Alderman Ronnie Hale.

With the approval of the Board of Aldermen, the City of Southaven purchased $8,000 worth of gift cards to Mesquite Chophouse for $4,000. The gift cards were bought with the intent of meeting and wooing business prospects.

"We got the cards for the purpose of having a little control over the spending," said Hale. "It gave us an opportunity to not only know where the money was going, we had strict guidelines that had to be followed to use the cards."

The problem is that the aldermen now say they do not know how many gift cards have been used.

During an executive session of Tuesday night's city council meeting, the board requested a full accounting of those gift cards from Mayor Greg Davis.

By e-mail, Davis told Action News 5 he cannot comment on the gift card issue because it is part of the ongoing investigation and trial.

"We were asking for any and all usage. What the balances were," explained Hale. "We need to see it. We haven't seen anything yet."

Hale says the aldermen can expect a full report within a couple days. If not, he says they plan to ask again.
