Teen injured in accidental shooting

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - A 16-year-old male was taken into custody after an accidental shooting between two teens Friday afternoon.

L.B. Richardson said that it was his son who was in the back of a squad car.

They had just gotten home from the laundromat, and his son was supposed to be inside folding clothes.

But the teenager must've walked to his friend's house down the street.

"I know he couldn't have did it,  because he ain't have no gun," said Richardson.

Neighbors said the 15-year-old was shot three times, once in the wrist and once in each side of his torso.

"That girl, his sister, said that boy shot 'his self.' Said he was down there playing with a gun when it went off. They didn't know there was no bullet in the barrel or whatever," said Richardson.

Police said the teen did not shoot himself, but it does appear to be an accident.

"It's just a flashback, you know," said resident Leslie Martin. "It brings back old memories of what happened to my children. It's just a feeling you won't get rid of."

Martin lost two of her sons within the past 10 years, both shot and killed.

"I mean they need to do something about these guns. It's getting worse and worse. Everyday you hear about somebody getting killed or shot. I mean, you know, it's a nightmare," said Martin.

Paramedics rushed the 15-year-old from the 1000 block of Garland to the hospital.

"I know he didn't do it. Whatever it is he get jammed up in. He had walked up at the wrong time," said Richardson.

Richardson said his son merely picked the wrong time to be in the wrong place.

At this point, the gunshots do not appear life-threatening and there have been no arrests.

Police said they are still investigating.
