America's best teachers gather in Memphis

(WMC-TV) - More than 100 of America's best teachers and principals are at work at the Memphis Cook Convention Center this weekend.

Some of these teachers are from the Memphis City School system.

They're all together to try and learn from one another about what makes them successful.

Steven McKinney is a math teacher at Booker T. Washington High and he's one of America's best teachers.

He's also an America Achieves fellow because of his education strategy of explaining the Pythagorean Theorem in practical ways.

McKinney is just one of 11 Memphis City schools teachers and principals in the classroom this weekend to learn how to become better.

"We see it as an opportunity to affect change in the students' lives," said fellow Monica Brown.

Brown is a teacher at Oakhaven Elementary.

She's happy the nationwide group is meeting in Memphis.

"Memphis is trying a lot of things right now. There's the merger, the race to the top, the achievement school district. They're trying a lot to make it better and we want to learn from them," said Peter Kannam with America Achieves.

America Achieves has put together a website that's open to all teachers.

The website is interactive and it shows some of the top teachers doing what they do best, and that's teaching in the classroom.

The website is designed to demonstrate various teaching techniques.
