Councilman describes KKK as America's Taliban

(WMC-TV) - Some Memphis City Council members are outraged after receiving rather hostile emails from someone claiming to be a member of the Ku Klux Klan.

People claiming to be members of the KKK have sent Memphis City Council members at least two messages that denounce their vote to change the names of three Confederate parks.

Councilman Myron Lowery describes the KKK as America's Taliban.

"Government is ruled by law and thoughtful action, and not by threats under the darkness of hoods," said councilman Lowery.

Council members learned state lawmakers were floating a bill to freeze the names of parks linked to wars.

Last Tuesday, the council fast-tracked a vote to change the names of Nathan Bedford Forrest, Confederate Park, and Jefferson Davis Park.

"My intention was to have a clear-cut, honest debate without emotional issues, without racial name-calling and it has degenerated into simply that because of the KKK," said Lowery.

Both emails were signed by people who claim to be members of the Traditionalist American Knights of the Ku Klux Klan.

One said the vote started a "battle."

The other calls the council cowards.

"They're cowardly because they don't show their faces. They're a nameless group of people who think they have some support," said Lowery.

The KKK is promising to bring its "largest rally ever" to Memphis in May or June.

"The good people of our city will ignore them, but let them have their say. That's their right under the Constitution," said Lowery.

Meanwhile, the council is forming a committee to rename the parks.
