Parents rally to stop lawsuit blocking municipal schools

(WMC-TV) - Parents from Better Bartlett Schools, Citizens of Collierville, and My Germantown Schools joined together at a rally outside the Shelby County Commission Monday to demand that the commission end its lawsuit blocking the suburbs from forming municipal schools.

The parents say ending the lawsuit will preserve the quality of education.

County schools are scheduled to merge with Memphis schools in August.  An analysis of the merged school system shows a $157 million budget gap.

Parents are particularly concerned about the loss of 441 school-based positions in the 51 suburban schools, roughly 10 percent of the current staff.

Action News 5's Kontji Anthony will bring you all the details, and reaction from the Shelby County Commission, on the news at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.
