Neighbors remember 4-year-old accidentally shot

(WMC-TV) - Residents in the Camelot Manor apartments share fond memories of the 4-year-old boy who was shot while playing with a gun.

Linda Simmons lives just below the little boy's apartment.

"I would never have anything around where he could get hurt," she said as she held her 1-year-old grandson in her arms.

Simmons says she never heard a gunshot Monday afternoon.

Police say Joshua Johnson's death was an accident.

"If you have guns around your home, please put them up from kids. A loaded gun with no safety is dangerous," Simmons continued.

No one answered the door to the Johnson's apartment.

Neighbors say no one has been there since the shooting happened.

Jeremy is a grounds keeper at Camelot.

He remembers the little boy very well.

"I seen him every morning. I'd say, 'Hey big daddy.'  He'd say, 'Hey big daddy,'" he said.

Neighbors say the little boy's death should serve as a reminder about what to do with your belongings when you have small kids in the house.

"They're curious about certain things they see," Simmons said.

"Keep guns concealed, where the clip isn't loaded, especially around kids. Always keep you're gun in a safe," said neighbor Steve Duberstine.

Joshua Johnson's grandmother is a deputy with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office.

According to MPD, the investigation continues. No charges have been filed.
