MPD TACT unit trains people to handle 'active shooter situations'

(WMC-TV) - It is what many of us fear.  Being at work, or shopping, and suddenly, hearing gunshots. How do you protect yourself when a shooter is on the loose?

Memphis police officers spent part of their day training business managers how to handle what they call an "active shooter situation".

In front of a packed house, Memphis police TACT unit officers stressed the importance of your initial reaction should someone walk into a crowded location and start shooting unexpectedly.

"It is unfortunate, but we do, we do have to talk about it now because we have a lot of cases that have come up regarding active shooters," said TACT Unit Commander Major Charles Morris.

An "active shooter" is described as someone whose sole mission is to kill a lot of people at one time, in one place.

"You have no warning on this. It could happen at anytime at anyplace," said Major Morris.

Memphis TACT Unit Major Charles Morris advises schools and businesses to have a plan in place in case of a surprise attack. He tells people to run if possible.

"Try to get away. If you can't get away, try to find you someplace to hide. And if your hiding place becomes compromised then you may have to fight," he added.

Police suggested a few other tips, too. If you have to hide, make sure your cell phone is on silent. If you have to fight, you have to fully commit to your actions.
