Mid-South family reaching out for help in 4-year-old's brittle bone fight

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) – A community is rallying around a Mid-South family, trying to help a young girl cope with the pain of brittle bone disease.

Bella Parker has a condition that makes her bones brittle. She's had more than 50 fractures, and she just celebrated her 4th birthday. The problem isn't going away, but her family is hoping to make coping a little easier.

If you looked at Bella Parker's freshly painted blue fingernails, you would think she looked like any other 4-year-old girl.

But the fact that she's able to have a makeshift manicure is nothing short of a miracle.

"When she first held her head up, we were ecstatic because we were told she'd never do that," Bella's mother, Mindy Parker said.

"In its simplest form, she breaks bones on a regular basis," Bill Parker, Bella's father said.

Bella has a disease that makes her bones brittle and her body a little smaller.

"She's wearing 12-month-old clothes and she just turned 4," Bill said.

January 30th was a birthday her parents weren't ever sure would come.

Now her family wants to help their growing daughter experience independence they never thought possible.

"We get really excited over small things, what most people would take for granted," Mindy said.

A walker helps her get around, safely exercises her legs, and even puts her snacks within reach. But equipment, medical bills and constant trips to specialty doctors continues to add up.

Family and friends are helping with a new online fundraiser.

"In 60 days we have to raise as much money as we can to pretty much accomplish the goals that we've set forth," Bill said.

The Parkers hope the fundraiser can help with a mobile chair and other needs for the growing and independent Bella.

"She knows she's little but she knows she's a big girl at heart and with that she's wanting to do all the things that kids are doing," Bill said.
