Middle school principal suspended after DUI charge

COVINGTON, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Crestview Middle School Principal James Fields is off the job and facing a DUI charge after the holiday weekend.

Fields has been school principal for 10 years but now he is at home awaiting his day in court.

The principal spent Saturday night in the Tipton County jail after being involved in a single-car accident along Huffman Road in Brighton.

The highway patrol says empty and full beer cans were found inside his damaged truck.

The report also indicates Fields admitted to drinking between eight and 12 beers at his home before the crash.

No one answered the door there when Action News 5's Justin Hanson tried to get a comment.

"It's just shocking. I hope he gets a fair trial and everything goes good for him," said Covington resident Carol Smith.

Smith used to be a substitute teacher at Crestview Middle School.

She says James Fields is an honorable man.

"We've all made mistakes and he just got caught, unfortunately. I hate it for him, I really do," Smith said.

James Fields is off the job without pay until his April 5 court date.
