MY TURN: Tributes to Judge W. Otis Higgs

(WMC-TV) - Accolades are pouring in for Judge W. Otis Higgs who died last week.

The tributes are coming from people who knew Higgs as a judge, a lawyer, a politician, a preacher, or a family man.  They all have their own reasons for praising him, but I was struck most by a quote from Shelby County District Attorney Amy Weirich.

She said, "He treated everyone with kindness and respect regardless of what side of the courtroom you were sitting on or regardless of the reasons you were sitting in the courtroom."

Many Memphians will remember Judge Higgs for his campaigns to be elected mayor of Memphis. Among his many public service roles, Higgs served briefly as Shelby County's first and only black sheriff.

For years, Judge Higgs also had a role here at WMC. He appeared on Action News 5 each week for a discussion segment called the "Action News 5 Insiders," and we remember him as an articulate advocate. It is absolutely fitting that today we pay tribute to W. Otis Higgs as a true statesman and a great Memphian.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email or call 800-465-1210.
