Convicted wife killer now faces financial charges

(WMC-TV) - Convicted murderer Joe Caronna is in jail for life for the brutal murder of his wife Tina.  But his days in the courtroom are not over.

Next Tuesday, Caronna has a date in federal court where he could plead guilty to stealing close to a million dollars from clients and insurance companies.

In the 57 count federal indictment, Caronna is accused of selling life insurance and other investment products from 2001 to 2009. He then allegedly used the money to gamble and to make expensive purchases on cars and antiques.

"It was quite a surprise as you can imagine when we found that we were all being duped by Joe Caronna," Matthew Struna said. "We met through the Memphis Corvette club and through some other mutual friends."

Struna wasn't just an investor. He opened his home to the grieving husband who would later be convicted of his wife's murder.

"I took him to our church for grief counseling and dinners here at our home and the whole time it was all a big scam and charade on his part," Struna said.

According to the indictment Caronna was taking out loans by forging clients' signatures.

He then would open bank accounts and P.O. Boxes in their names to collect the checks. He is also accused of collecting premiums on bogus policies.

His take was more than $788,00, but some of Caronna's victims got their money back.

In October of 2008 Tina Caronna's body was found stuffed in the back seat of her pick-up truck she had been asphyxiated with a plastic bag.

Prosecutors said Caronna murdered his wife because she was about to discover his alleged financial fraud scheme.

Despite a sentence of 40 years to life, the Arizona Board of Executive Clemency voted to release him from prison into home arrest. Family members of the victims are concerned for the safety of the community, as are new members of the Clemency Board. CBS 5 Investigates videotaped Huff riding a bike through his Tucson neighborhood. There are no restrictions placed on his proximity to children.
