Couple indicted after 4-year-old dies in accidental shooting

(WMC-TV) - A mother was charged Friday in the death of her 4-year-old after the child got a hold of a gun and shot himself.

The tragedy happened in early February when Jessica Johnson was sleeping.

Johnson is charged with reckless homicide after an investigation revealed she owned the gun that killed her 4-year-old son.

The shooting happened near the 3900 block of Camelot Lane on February 11.

According to police Johnson feel asleep in her bedroom with her son.

In the same bedroom her boyfriend, Clarence Coleman, left the gun in a shoe box. According to the report, it was easily accessible. That's how 4-year-old Joshua found it and shot himself.

Coleman is charged with reckless endangerment.

District Attorney Amy Weirich hopes this tragic event serves as a reminder to lock up your guns.

"This tragedy should be a wake-up call to all gun owners. It is your responsibility to make sure children can't reach or use your guns," she said.

If you do not have a gun lock at home, you can get one at any of the nine Memphis Police Precincts and receive a free gun safety kit.

Lauren Squires will show you how those kits work tonight on Action News 5 at 10 p.m.
