Former teammates remember Coach Jimmy McClain

(WMC-TV) - Former teammates of the basketball coach who was found dead in his home last week are talking about his work on and off the court.

Dennis Moore shared stories and photos from his "basketball days" at University of Central Arkansas. He and Jimmy McClain played on the team that included standouts like Scottie Pippen.

"He played so hard, Coach Jones dubbed him 'Full Time' because he was full speed, full time, all the time, he didn't take off," said Dennis Moore.

His basketball career eventually led him to coaching at Ridgeway High School.

But that all ended Friday, when he was found dead inside his Cordova home after he failed to show up to work for several days.

"You hate to have that happen to anybody, but Jimmy, you couldn't have met a better person," said Moore.

And Moore says that "person" was as dedicated to his team as he was the sport.

"He was the guy that was always 'rah-rah'ing' everyone. Whether he was in the game or not in the game," explained Moore.

McClain also preached Sundays. He drove from Memphis to the Church of Christ in Benton, Arkansas.

"The first time I heard him it was like really joy," said Ronnie Martin, former UCA teammate.

Ronnie Martin saw his former U-C-A teammate in the pulpit several times. He said that became a second passion for McClain.

"He was a good Christian, he really believed in the word, in the Bible," said Martin.

He was a man of faith and sports who, teammates say, will not be forgotten.

There are no suspects in custody for Coach McClain's murder.

Investigators ask if you have any information on the case, call the Shelby County Sheriff's Detective Unit at 901-222-5600.
