Dozens of sex offenders live within mile elementary school

(WMC-TV) - A group of parents claim that there are dozens of sex offenders living near a Mid-South elementary school.

Now they're fighting to keep their children out of that school.

"Got 16 children. All has attended Norris Elementary," said Christine Thomas who has lived across the street from Norris Elementary School for 54 years.

Similarly, resident Hughes Golden has lived in the neighborhood for 55 years, and all five of his sons went to Norris Elementary.

"For (the kids') safety and convenience, yes I would hate to see it closed," said Golden.

Now the campus is on the list for possible closure, much to the dismay of the surrounding neighborhood.

"It would really, it would hurt us," said Thomas.

Besides history, many neighbors said they oppose Norris closing because they worry about current students' safety.

Tuesday night, some parents' begged the school board to reconsider closing Norris because of increased danger.

They cite sex offender statistics.

Action News 5's search of the state registry showed 28 living within a mile of Norris Elementary. There are 51 living within a mile of Hamilton Elementary, where Norris students may end up.

Others fear the longer commute, in which some students would be walking down busy Elvis Presley Boulevard.

A handful of schools face possible closure or consolidation.

There is no decision yet, the board is still in the process of holding public hearings on the issue.
