Unified School Board member storms out of meeting

(WMC-TV) - Unified School Board member Sara Lewis is a passionate supporter of the underdog, and that passion took center stage when Thursday night's meeting turned to outsourcing Memphis City Schools' custodians.

Lewis stormed out of the meeting to the sound of a scattered applause and as she left, she made a promise.

"I am not going to do this. And I am going to do everything in my power to expose what I know has occurred," she said on her way out the door. "That is not a threat, ladies and gentlemen, that is a promise."

She continued, "Y'all know who I'm talking about and I'm [going to] find my lawyer, 'cause I'm gonna deal with this."

But, Lewis was not done. She eventually returned to the meeting and spoke, again, against outsourcing MCS custodial work.

"My soul won't allow me to do this. My soul will not allow me to do this. Because, if I do, I'm a hypocrite," she said. "We cannot do this and hurt the least of us, among us."

"There's got to be some other ways in which we can effectuate some kind of savings and do something until we can provide the kind of, but there has to be not only a leveling up. There has to be a leveling down and across the board."

She mentioned she overheard a conversation about this at a Las Vegas casino.

Action News 5's Kym Clark called Lewis to see if she would share whose conversation she overheard, but she said she did not have time to talk.
