Oakland, TN abuzz after sudden resignation by mayor

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) –Tonight, the quiet town of Oakland, Tennessee is abuzz amid the sudden resignation of its mayor.

"I decided to resign because I have not been true to my wife and I have neglected my family," Oakland Mayor Scott Ferguson said. "I feel based on my convictions I've turned my back on my faith."

Ferguson cleaned out his office Monday afternoon and turned in his resignation from his $62,000 a year job as mayor.

The former Pastor and father of four said he made the decision because he does not think he can be effective as mayor because of his admitted transgressions.

The decision came after a photo of Ferguson made the rounds in Oakland.

"It's a little concerning when you see that show up in public," Oakland Vice Mayor Chris Goodman said.

Goodman said Ferguson's resignation came as a complete surprise.

"I'm a bit shocked I would have liked a little warning," Goodman said. "Great thing about the citizens of Oakland is that they were interested in change. It's just a great opportunity for us to move forward."

Goodman said while Ferguson was mayor there were complaints of misspending city money. Aldermen in the city filed a complaint with the Tennessee State Comptroller alleging illegal hiring practices under Ferguson and use of public property that included a Tahoe Ferguson leased when he became Mayor.

"I am generally unhappy with the way Oakland has been running its business and it includes the mayor who I think is costly for the management of the town," Oakland resident Randy Elkins said.

Ferguson said he is trying to reconcile with his wife.

The Vice Mayor said the board of aldermen will meet to accept Ferguson's resignation and the Vice Mayor will then take over as mayor.
