Sales tax proposal goes before city hall

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) – We have been talking about the push for a possible sales tax hike for months. Last month, the city council delayed their decision on the issue. Tuesday afternoon, the proposal will be up for a final reading.

The resolution would raise the Memphis sales tax to 9.75. Millions of those dollars would go to establish a pre-kindergarten program and reduce the property tax rate.

It's similar to the Shelby County referendum that was voted down last November. The proposal does have the support of Mayor AC Wharton, but has been a hard sell for some of the Council members

If this ordinance passes, Memphis voters will get their say on it during a special election scheduled for September.

Tuesday's meeting will get underway at City Hall at 3:30 p.m. We will let you know what happens.
