Six charged after residence search where officer was shot

(WMC-TV) - Six people are facing drug-related charges after officers executed a search warrant Tuesday where one officer was shot by friendly fire.

"This is not Nutbush, not in the least," said neighbor Dewey Sims.

Police raided a house on Berkshire and Ozark arresting six people after finding crack cocaine floating in the toilet.

According to the Memphis police report, 44-year-old Wayman May, 41-year-old Kendall Draffin, 54-year-old Shirley Jackson, 50-year-old William Vanderford, 34-year-old Audrey Birdwell, and 32-year-old Ericka Fitch were all charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to manufacture, deliver, and sell.

During the search of the residence, officers recovered 5.3 grams of crack cocaine, a fully loaded Glock .40 caliber handgun, a stolen Taurus revolver loaded with five rounds, a digital scale, and two Lortab pills.

Police said three pit bull dogs charged one of the officers. The buckshot pellets from the shotgun rounds penetrated the sheetrock and exited through the wood structure of the house striking 45-year-old Officer Calvin Taylor in the legs. Taylor is a 15 year veteran of the police force.

He was taken by ambulance to The MED in non-critical condition, and was later released overnight

It is the third Organized Crime Unit search warrant shooting in a matter of months.

"I think our guys are prepared," said Memphis Police Department deputy chief Anthony Berryhill

He said OCU served 400 search warrants last year, and the number of shootings were small by comparison.

"I am extremely comfortable, the director is extremely comfortable with the level of training our guys are getting," said Berryhill. "We train quite frequently. We have a great training staff. The training is intense, the training is very realistic. It's the best training you can get."

Berryhill said these same officers were doing stairwell training earlier in the day.

The name of the officer who fired shots will not be released until the completion of the debriefing process.
