DeSoto Co. leaders: New $5 million heating system isn't working

(WMC-TV) - Although it was just installed last summer people are complaining about the heat, or the lack thereof, at the DeSoto County Courthouse.

The county invested about $5 million into a green heating system.

All in hopes of saving taxpayers money over time, but the new system is doing more bad than good.

The DeSoto County Courthouse is freezing inside, according to County Clerk Dale Thompson.

"We've had to bring in space heaters in here, and they don't want us to do that," she said.

It sort of defeats the purpose of a new state of the art water chilling system installed less than a year ago.

"It's not working for this building because it's such an old building and it's hard to heat up," said Thompson.

DeSoto county leaders reportedly paid $5 million in bonds for the new system along with new light fixtures, and other energy modifications to reduce the overall energy costs

The energy savings to taxpayers was projected to be $375,000. County leaders wanted that to pay for the bonds, but the problem is, according to workers at the courthouse, the system is not working as promised.

Siemens installed the system at the courthouse. Action News 5 tried to contact the person affiliated with the project at Siemens, but our calls have not been returned.

In the meantime, courthouse employees and visitors have to deal with the temperatures inside the courthouse and out until the system is working properly.

DeSoto county leaders are awaiting answers from Siemens. They hope to get more answers at a meeting set for later this month.
